A powerful explosion rocked the boxship YM Mobility at a container terminal in the Beilun Port area of Zhoushan Port earlier today. Initial reports indicate that a container on the ship exploded, causing a significant fire and sending plumes of smoke billowing into the sky.
Surveillance footage circulating online shows the terrifying moment the explosion occurred, around 1:46 pm local time. A large volume of smoke was initially observed emanating from the ship, followed by a massive blast that scattered debris across the terminal.
The YM Mobility, a Liberia-flagged container ship owned by Taiwanese carrier Yang Ming, has a capacity of 6,589 TEU. It is reported to have been berthed at the Ningbo Phase 3 Terminal at the time of the incident.
Authorities have launched an emergency response, with patrol boats, fire tugboats, and shore-based fire crews dispatched to the scene. While there have been no reports of casualties thus far, the extent of the damage to the ship and the terminal remains unclear.
Speculation is rife about the cause of the explosion, with some reports suggesting that the cargo involved was glycerin. However, official confirmation of this is yet to be released.
The incident has prompted concerns about the safety of container ships and the potential hazards posed by the cargo they carry. Investigations into the cause of the explosion are ongoing.
