Summer of Rail Challenges
The upcoming summer months are set to bring significant disruptions to rail freight transport between Italy and Benelux. A combination of planned infrastructure works and maintenance projects are causing widespread challenges for shippers.
Key Disruptions
Germany: The Rheintalstrecke, a crucial rail corridor between Mannheim and Basel, will undergo temporary closure. This will necessitate rerouting trains through France, leading to increased costs and reduced capacity.
Italy: Multiple infrastructure projects are planned, including extensive maintenance at the Segrate and Busto rail terminals. These works will result in temporary closures and rerouting of trains. Additionally, cargo bound for Southern Italy will face further delays due to missing direct connections.
Switzerland: Repairs on the Gotthard base tunnel, scheduled for completion in September, will also contribute to overall congestion.
Impact on Shipping
These disruptions are expected to significantly impact shipping operations. To mitigate the effects, carriers are implementing additional surcharges to cover increased costs and operational challenges. These surcharges will apply to all rail-connected cargo to and from Italy, with additional fees for cargo to and from specific regions.
Limited Capacity and Potential Delays
Shippers should anticipate limited capacity and potential delays during this period. While carriers will strive to accommodate cargo, alternative transportation options may be necessary.
Staying Informed
It is essential for shippers to stay informed about the evolving situation. Regular communication with your freight forwarder or carrier is crucial to understanding the impact on your shipments and to explore potential alternatives.
By proactively addressing these challenges and maintaining open communication, shippers can minimize disruptions to their supply chains.
