Intergroup Global Forwarding would like to inform our valued customers about the upcoming phases of infrastructure work on the Rheintalbahn, which will significantly impact rail freight operations.
Planned Infrastructure Works
The Rheintalbahn, a critical rail corridor, is undergoing essential maintenance and upgrades in several phases throughout 2024. These works are necessary to improve the long-term efficiency and reliability of the rail network.
Phase 3 (May 18-20, 2024): Partial closure at night (10pm-5am). This phase will coincide with the Pentecost bank holiday in several European countries, leading to potential re-routings, timetable adjustments, and limitations on profile/weight parameters. Some P400 semi-trailers may be restricted on certain trains.
Phase 4 (August 9-30, 2024): Total closure for three weeks. This phase will require significant diversions and route adjustments. Alternative routes include the French line (Lauterbourg-Worth-Strasbourg) without P400 restrictions, the French corridor via Metz-Strasbourg-Basel with C50 profile limitations, and the Austrian corridor (Brenner, Tarvisio) without P400 restrictions.
Phase 5 (August 30-September 6, 2024): Permanent full closure of a single track.
Impact on Rail Freight
These infrastructure works will inevitably cause disruptions to rail freight services. To mitigate the impact, Hupac has carefully planned alternative routes and absorbed additional costs for phases 1, 2, and 3. However, the increased complexity and resource requirements of phases 4 and 5 may necessitate adjustments to our services.
